How to start a blog

Wednesday, 29 January 2020

Blogging is a popular hobby these days, especially with so many easy to use platforms and ways to monetise a blog. With a lot of bloggers turning their website into a profit-generating business from the comfort of their own home, it’s not hard to see why everyone is so interested in the career path.

One thing that a lot of people struggle with is knowing how to actually start a blog. Which websites to use to start a blog, what to blog about, and even how to make money with a blog. Luckily for you, I have developed this guide to show you the exact steps it takes to get your blog up and running (and I’ve even thrown in some handy discounts and links to make sure you’re off to the best start possible).

So, let’s dig in!

How to choose and buy a domain name for your blog

Choosing a domain name is the first step to starting a blog. It is a bit like a business name, what do you want to be known as? A lot of successful bloggers use their own name, or include some wording from their niche. For SEO purposes, it is best to include what your blog is about in the domain name. So if you are a food blogger, you could have food, recipes, or eats in your title.
Choosing a catchy, memorable domain name is very important. It is your branding for your blog. Once you’ve selected a name, you can check availability when you go to purchase it from any reputable domain name seller. I like namecheap for low prices, and GoDaddy for good service.

What is blog hosting?

Blog hosting, or website hosting, is similar to renting out a building for your store – only you’re renting a piece of the internet to place your blog on. When you get a host, you’ve got your own little slice of the internet to build your beautiful blog on. Once it’s connected to your domain name, that’s your address!

How to choose a blog host

There are many blog hosts available out there, so when it comes to choosing the right website hosting it might feel like an overwhelming decision. I think the top considerations to take in are price, bandwidth, control panel capabilities and inclusions such as email addresses or WordPress one click install.

One of the most highly recommended hosts for starting a WordPress blog is Bluehost. If you use my link to purchase this hosting, I will make a commission – that’s because I’m an affiliate, and while some people might think that’s a dirty word it simply means I’ve had such a great experience with their hosting and products that I’m willing to put my name on the line to promote them. I’m so confident you’ll love them, that you’ll even consider becoming an affiliate yourself (this might be your first step towards monetizing your blog!)

Bluehost comes with great traffic allowances and allows you to easily add email hosting. To sweeten the deal, if you choose to host with Bluehost and purchase through my affiliate link I’ll have a special gift for you! When you purchase your web hosting via my link, send me your receipt, and I will sent you one of logo from my shop FOR FREE! So now, you’ve got your hosting and your blog logo sorted.

Setting up WordPress

Setting up WordPress is super easy, if you have a hosting option like Bluehost they do the hard work for you. All you really have to do is choose a beautiful theme and start posting great content!
Wordpress Themes

Choosing a suitable and eye-catching WordPress theme while still having a readable and inviting website is one of the most important factors to a successful blog. A visually pleasing site loaded with great content is essential to getting readers to stay on your website and boost your SEO. Google loves websites where visitors click through as many pages as possible.

There are thousands (literally) of options out there for WordPress themes, and plugins like Divi and Elementor help to build websites with these fundamental blocks. How do you choose a theme? How do you know if a paid theme is right for you? Paid themes give you more flexibility in customisation and content creation. They also have a lot more talent behind them, for example, the BluChic WordPress themes. Again, this is an affiliate link so one I really believe in and use on my own site.

BluChic are one of the most popular WordPress theme developers around and are even backed by WordPress themselves. They have excellent testimonials, customer service and a great affiliate program so if you decide you love it as much as I do then you’ll have another shot at monetizing your blog.
